CYCLING THE DINGLE PENINSULA

If only there was a way you could experience the Dingle Peninsula that was faster than walking and healthier than driving… There is: Cycling. Touring the Dingle Peninsula by bicycle is a great way to discover the incredible views and unique atmosphere of the area without bilstering your heels or burning fuel (apart from calories, of course).

Choose from challenging mountain climbs or comfortably flat terrain. Starting from the Dingle Bay Hotel, you could follow the route of the Slea Head Drive, and enjoy a bit of both.

The Conor Pass

For a true test of your cycling skills, you can’t beat the Conor Pass. Your thighs may be screaming at you as you climb this exceptionally narrow, winding road, but it’s worth it for the rolling hillsides swathed in velvet grass topped by views that soon obliterate the pain in your legs. Be careful on the descent and pay attention to the warning sighs; Chiselled out of the rock face, this section of the road plummets at a dizzying angle and about as wide as a ribbon.

You can continue from the Conor Pass and make a loop back to Dingle via Castlegregory, Camp, and Lispole. Take a detour between Aughacasla and Castlegregory and visit Glanteenasig Forest Park.

An alternative cycling adventure takes you along the lesser-known coastline of the northwest of the peninsula. Taking in Castlegregory, Ballyhoneen, Cloghane, Brandon Point, Brandon, and Stradbally, this route brings you to deserted sandy beaches, fuchsia-lined boithríns, and picturesque villages.

The Essentials

You can rent bikes from several outlets in Dingle town; we’d be happy to help you with directions in the Dingle Bay Hotel. Helmets are not compulsory, but it is highly advisable to wear one, especially given the many steep and winding roads in the area.

Cycling is hungry and thirsty work, but you’ll find plenty of places where you can happily slake your thirst and sate your appetite in Dingle town!
